Traditional lance run clears path for Tony Cote Summer Games

After months of anticipation, the 2024 Tony Cote Summer Games are about to begin!

Hundreds of athletes will be welcomed by the Lac La Ronge Indian Band Saturday, August 10 as they play host to the biennial multi-sport event.

The Games will feature events in archery, canoe, golf, soccer, softball, volleyball and athletics, with three different age categories (13U, 15U and 17U) joining in competition.

To mark the commencement of the event, 10 youth from James Smith Cree Nation – hosts of the 2022 Games – embarked on the traditional lance run on Wednesday, August 7, travelling by foot from Saskatoon to La Ronge. The run symbolizes the previous hosts clearing a path for the 2024 athletes, as well as honours the spirit of Tony Cote, the founder of the Games.

Opening ceremonies will take place on Sunday, August 11 and will be followed by a celebratory BBQ to welcome all the attendees.
