Remembering former Sask Sport president Darrell Baker

Sask Sport mourns the loss of former board President Darrell Baker.

Sport was a major part of the foundation that made up Baker’s life. During his time as a coach, athlete and volunteer, he touched the lives of an innumerable number of individuals.

His love for sport led him to play baseball for 27 years, as well as coach late into his sporting career. Baker coached at the first two editions of the Saskatchewan Summer Games—1972 and 1976—where his baseball team finished top of the podium. In addition, he led Team Saskatchewan at the 1982 Canada Summer Games in Thunder Bay.

Baker wanted as many individuals as possible to share in his passion of sport, which led him to attending 10 Saskatchewan Games in various roles from coach to mission staff member. In 2005, he was the Administration and Finance Division Vice-President, who assisted in organizing the Canada Summer Games that were hosted in Regina.

He spent over 50 years dedicating time to helping ensure multi-sport events could take place in the province and across the country.

As one of his many volunteer roles, Baker also served on the Sask Sport board of Directors from 1999-2003, holding the role of President in 2001-02. He also served as Chair of the Saskatchewan Games Council.
