Merek Yeager hits home with baseball

Merek Yeager has always been involved in sports, but his passion for baseball has led him to gain invaluable experiences before even graduating high school.

The Muenster local was introduced to sport at four-years-old, starting with tee ball and hockey prior to exploring a variation of sports in high school.

“When I started school, I got into soccer and played all through high school. I also got into volleyball, badminton, cross-country, curling and track,” said Yeager, who currently plays with the 18U AAA East Central Red Sox.

At some point between his numerous commitments to different sports, Yeager realized baseball offered him an experience that he hadn’t felt in other games.

“I came to my senses that I was quite a bit better at baseball. I enjoy it more and it is more of a game that attributes to my characteristics as a human. I began to prefer baseball and put in more effort, time and worked harder…which led me to great places.”

Yeager had his first stint in AAA baseball at 13years-old, playing with the AAA Bantam League. His skill development and passion for the sport went hand-in-hand as he continued to pursue a future in baseball.

“It was a gradual thing. I started when I was young and had a good mindset. I would throw a ball into a net [for practice] in my spare time and I was able to develop habits as I got older. I kept going at it each day and I got better each time.”

What started as a pastime during adolescence became something more, which led Yeager to commit himself to baseball. His passion for the sport grew with him and so the desire to develop his skills.

He attended camps in his spare time and was able to interact with various coaches, which eventually led to training opportunities in Saskatoon.

Since, Yeager has traveled around the country and world developing his skills. His efforts were recognized when he represented Saskatchewan last August in Fort McMurray, Alberta for the 18U National Championships.

“When I first got the invite to join Team Saskatchewan, I was super proud… it has been the most rewarding part of my career.”

Yeager has also recently added another accomplishment to his career. On May 7, he was announced alongside 30 other athletes to attend the Canadian Junior National Team’s Pro Academy Camp in the Dominican Republic from May 13-21 Over ten days, he will compete in 13 games, taking on the pro academies of multiple MLB teams.

Going forward, Yeager remains dedicated to developing his skills and pursing a future in baseball, knowing that his current efforts will allow him to take a step toward achieving his goals.

“I want to win provincials again so I can attend nationals with the goal of medaling. From there, I want to make Team Canada and win the Canada Cup.”
