February is Black History Month

For three decades, February has marked Black History Month in Canada.

In all sectors of society, including the sporting community, the month acts as an opportunity to honour and celebrate the contributions that Black Canadians have made and continue to make.

Sask Sport recognizes the importance of equity and diversity and is committed to providing fun, safe and healthy sport environments.

This year’s theme for Black History Month is: “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” The theme recognizes the enduring legacy of Black Canadians, whose creativity, innovation and resilience have shaped our past, influence our present and will continue to inspire future generations.

“The stories of Black communities are woven into the very fabric of Canada’s history. As we mark 30 years of Black History Month in Canada, we honour the legacy and contributions of Black Canadians across generations, from those who helped build our country to those shaping its future. This anniversary gives us the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to advancing equity, inclusion and opportunity for Black communities from coast to coast to coast,” said the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages.

In February and beyond, we are committed to honouring, recognizing and celebrating Black History Month stories through the lens of sport, while sharing information and resources from organizations across the country to help better spread awareness and understanding of the month’s importance in Canada.
