For almost 50 years, February has marked Black History Month in Canada.
It is an opportunity to honour and celebrate the contributions that Black Canadians have made and continue to make, in all sectors of society, including sport.
Sask Sport recognizes the importance of equity and diversity and is committed to providing fun, safe and healthy sport environments.
This year’s theme for Black History Month is: “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.” The theme reflects on the contributions of Black Canadians and their part in shaping our country, while paving the way for a more equitable and inclusive future.
“In Canada, diversity is a fact, but inclusion is a choice; for far too long Black communities in Canada have been faced with anti-Black and systemic racism.” – The Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities
In February and beyond, we are committed to honouring, recognizing and celebrating Black History Month stories through the lens of sport, while sharing information and resources from organizations across the country to help better spread awareness and understanding of the month’s importance in Canada.
