Barth, Qing medal at Special Olympics World Winter Games

From March 8-15, over 1,500 athletes from 102 countries attended the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

The Games featured events in eight different winter sports, with two Regina athletes representing the province in alpine skiing. 

Taylor Barth claimed gold in the M08 intermediate giant slalom with a time of 1:06.290 and in the M06 intermediate slalom race with a 31.990 second time. In addition, Barth competed in the M01 intermediate super G event with a 42.52 time and finished fourth.

Meanwhile, Michael Qing secured silver in the M11 intermediate giant slalom event with a time of 1:31.59 seconds. He also finished fifth in M07 intermediate slalom and sixth in the M05 intermediate super G with a time of 53.67 seconds.

On the coaching side, Eric Lautsch attended the Games with Canada’s snowshoe team, guiding them to claim gold in the M01 and F01 divisions, as well as in the 4 x 100 -metre relay.

Speed skater Jordan Stevenson was also selected to represent Canada at the Games, but unfortunately passed away prior. To read more about Jordan and his impact in the Special Olympics community, please visit teamcanada.specialolympics.ca
