Team Saskatchewan will be attending the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships for the 20th year from May 7-13 in Winnipeg. The event will feature elite Saskatchewan hockey players ranging from ages 14-17.
The Saskatchewan men’s team brought home silver in the past three championships. Combined the women’s and men’s teams from Saskatchewan have collected 24 medals over the past 20 years.
The championship offers Indigenous hockey players the chance to come together from thirteen provinces and territories to challenge each other for a medal-winning position.
This years’ athletes come from 31 different communities in the province including, Whitecap Dakota Sioux Nation, Ochapowace First Nation, Big River First Nation, Saskatoon, Timiskaming First Nation, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Onion Lake Cree Nation, Birch Hills, Ahtahkakoop First Nation, Pasqua First Nation, Keeseekoose, Cross Lake First Nation, Prince Albert, Muscowpetung, Cumberland House Cree Nation, Yorkton, Muskeg Lake First Nation, George Gordan First Nation, Lac La Ronge, Swift Current, Blood/Kainai, Carry The Kettle, Witchekan Lake, Muskoday, Opaskwayak, Sweetgrass First Nation, Unity, IAhtahkakoop First Nation, Muskoday, Kahkewistahaw and St. Walburg.
The Saskatchewan women’s team will play against Manitoba in the preliminary round Monday at 11 a.m., the men’s hit the ice at 2:15 p.m. Monday against B.C.
